Who is eligible in NC for disability benefits from Social Security? To get Social Security disability benefits you have to fit in one or more of the following categories:
Be disabled and have worked a fair amount in the recent past — Disability Insurance Benefits
Be disabled and quite poor –SSI
Be disabled, be 60 or older, have become disabled within a few years after becoming a widow or widower of someone who worked a fair amount — Disabled Widow and Widower Benefits. And don’t forget that widowers are covered too.
Become disabled before age 22 and be the child of someone who is on Social Security benefits or who died after earning enough to be covered under Social Security — Disabled Adult Child Benefits
